Obituary

Martin Evans Smith (Woody) passed away from complications due to cancer on Sunday, January 17, 2019, at the age of 59 years.

Martin was born to the late Agnes Matilda Yellowhorn and Joseph Smith. He grew up on the Piikani Nation Reservation located in Brocket, AB. He attended Ricks College, now known as BYU - Idaho, located in Rexburg, Idaho U.S.A. where he met his wife, Bernadette, and they were married on November 27, 1982. They were later sealed to each other at the Cardston Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 12, 1985. They went on to have 7 beautiful children and one grandson whom he loved and adored. This November 27, 2019, Martin and Bernadette would have been married for 37 years.

Martin not only loved sports, but enjoyed participating in them, whether it was hockey, baseball, volleyball, basketball, golfing, hunting, and fishing. He taught his wife, Bernadette, how to play baseball so the two of them could enjoy playing the sport together which they did.

Martin’s career as a Journeyman Electrician spanned over 3 decades earning his journeyman’s at S.A.I.T. in Calgary, AB, and at the time of his passing he was employed with the Shel-Bar Electrical/Security Services, a place where he enjoyed great success and happiness. We are so grateful to the company for treating Martin with respect, honor and dignity.

Martin was someone whose presence filled the room, always finding the right balance between seriousness and humor, whether he was sharing words of wisdom or helping you to cheer on your favorite team. Martin always tried to make you feel welcome in his own unique way. One of Martin’s great attributes was his ability as a leader when called upon, and this quality served him well when he became a Scout Leader for the 206th L.D.S. group. Martin’s experience in leadership positions greatly enhanced his career as an electrician, earning him both accolades and comments of rebuke from those he led. The latter of which Martin would jokingly remark, “I know I’m doing my job right when someone is mad at me.”

Martin lived a life in which he accomplished a great deal of success through his perseverance, through his determination and faith. We, as his family, are deeply grateful for the journey he took us on through thick and thin in life together as a family. We celebrate his love for us and the life he lived along with those who knew him. We thank all those for their love and support of Martin, especially for the things he loved and were very important to him in his life; a deep gratitude from us, his loving family.
