Smith, Cleon Verl February 10, 1928 – January 28, 2014

Cleon Verl Smith, born February 10, 1928 in Cardston, Alberta, passed away on January 28, 2014 in Calgary at the age of 85 years. He grew up in Glenwood, Alberta. After finishing school Cleon obtained a teaching certificate in Edmonton and taught junior high school in the towns of Del Bonita and Hillspring. He served two missions for his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Ontario, Canada and Oakland, California. On December 16, 1954 he married his sweetheart, Meridee Moyle, in the Salt Lake Temple. Cleon graduated from Brigham Young University in 1956 with a master’s in geology. They have 6 children, Stephen (Sarah), Kelly (Diane), Miriam Rau (Glenn), Collin (Marg), Murray (Heidi), and Nathan (Julie). Cleon and Meridee have been happily married for 59 years and have 25 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Cleon spent his professional life as a geologist. He was very active in his faith and filled many callings in his church culminating with his calling as a patriarch for the Calgary Alberta Foothills Stake. He will be greatly missed by those of us left behind but much comfort can be taken in the knowledge that he is now reunited with many of his family members including his son Collin and brothers Thaine and Grant who predeceased him. A Visitation will be held for Cleon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Foothills Stake Center, located at 30 Everstone Boulevard SW, Calgary, on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at the same location on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Burial will take place on February 8, 2014 in Alpine, Utah. Messages of condolence may be forwarded to the family at www.piersons.ca.
