Colleen Mary Broens
May 22, 1942 — February 12, 2017
It is with incredibly heavy hearts that the family of Colleen Broens announces her passing on February 12, 2017, in Calgary, at the age of 74 years. Colleen is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, William; her loving children Bill (Ursula), Susan, and Lori (Kent); her four adoring grandchildren, as well as other close family and dear friends.
It is near impossible to put in to words what an incredible person Colleen was. Her husband William had said it best with “She was the most awesome person I knew; she was the light of my life”. That was Colleen in a nut shell. She was a mother to everyone, her love knew no boundaries. She had the wisdom to know early on in life, that not one person is the same. She would always take the time and care to really get to know someone, whether it be family, friends, or complete strangers passing her by on the street. Colleen accepted people for who they were and always encouraged them to be themselves, to do what made them happy. She had a real zest for life, always reminding people that “Life is a long road and you never know where it will lead”. She was, indeed, a force to be reckoned with. Colleen’s strong will demonstrated time after time, her love of a challenge, she was fearless. Colleen loved to travel, she and William had many adventures together, whether it be in a car, on a bike, or in a trailer, they were never still for long. While at home, if she wasn’t in the role of Property Manager, she would fill her time with baking her famously delicious pies, cakes, and breads for friends, family, and acquaintances alike. If the season was right, she could also be found tending her garden, a passion she has always had being a true farm girl at heart. The impression Colleen has left on this earth will never be filled. She will be so dearly missed by all those who had the absolute pleasure of knowing her. At the request of Colleen, there will be no formal services, instead, have a dance, plant a flower, and raise a glass to a life well lived.
