On Friday, March 24, 2023 Mr. Douglas Wayne Cook of Calgary, Alberta passed away after a brief battle with an infection at the age of 53 years.
The only son to Wayne and Rochelle Cook, Doug grew up with his older sister, Daphne, on the island of Grand Manan, New Brunswick. Here, Doug thrived in athletic pursuits, playing soccer, baseball, and basketball. From the time he was a young boy, Doug was a walking encyclopedia on anything sports related. He collected sports memorabilia and trading cards his whole life. Doug always enjoyed a spirited debate about sporting events. He made many friends and “frenemies” alike dependent on ones’ choice of team or athlete.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from St. Thomas University (1992), Doug began his career as a customs broker first in Fredericton, then Ottawa, and finally in Calgary. He also worked as a Security Supervisor. For the past eight years, Doug took great pleasure being a concierge at the GrandView Condominium building in downtown Calgary.
Doug is survived by his father Wayne Cook (Shelley) of Grand Manan, New Brunswick; sister Daphne (Henk) Dykhuizen of Ottawa, Ontario; step siblings Allyson (Doug) MacDonald of Fredericton, NB, Debra (James) Dexter of Grand Manan, NB; Michael Bagley of Grand Manan, NB; uncle and aunts Howard (Kathy) McDowell of Riverview, NB, Nancy Card of St. George, NB; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He will be greatly missed by his Calgary Family (the Altasaini’s), friends, and colleagues. Douglas is predeceased by his mother J. Rochelle Cook in 1983.
Doug’s Grand Manan friends and heartbroken family will remember him at his Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. (Atlantic Standard Time) from The Lighthouse Church, 1212 Rte 776, Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick.
