Ed McKerrell ~ On the Road Again
Edgar Donald McKerrell was born on September 23, 1923 in Verdun, Quebec to George McKerrell and Ellen Watkins. He was the last surviving of two older siblings, Mabel and Gordon, and two younger, Eileen and brother Neil who died as a child.
Ed was always an adventurer who loved to be on the road. He joined the Merchant Marine when not quite 18 and served in WWII. On his return he met the love of his life, Helena Wiebe. They were married for 68 years and had seven children.
Ed worked at many jobs, oilfield worker, truck driver, millwright and carpenter/contractor. They called many places home including Winnipeg MB, Edmonton AB, Mordon MB, Thompson MB, and Pinawa MB where their children were born and later, Banff, Red Deer and area and finally Calgary.
Ed and Helen loved to explore. Their travels took them through much of the U.S. most notably Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii as well as much of Canada. In the last 6 years Ed traveled to the Arctic on a cruise, to Vancouver Island, to Arizona, to Sicamous and to Spain. He loved camping, fishing and hunting. He was always up for the next trip or experience.
Ed took up painting in his later years and did some impressive canvases. He loved music, particularly country music and had quite a collection on his iPad. He embraced technology and was always ready for change. And despite being legally blind and deaf and being confined to a wheelchair these last couple of years, he maintained his positive attitude, his keen sense of humour and his zest for life right to the end.
Ed passed away March 27, 2022 at the age of 98 years and 6 months. He was predeceased by his parents and 4 siblings, his beloved wife Helen, and his grandson Matthew Thurston. He leaves to mourn his loss his seven children, Don (Donna) McKerrell, George (Cheryl) McKerrell, Kathy (Lorne) Thurston, Audrey (Byron) Davies, Dale (Julie) McKerrell, Colleen (Scot Murin) McKerrell, and Bob (Marnie) McKerrell, 16 grandchildren and respective spouses and 15 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Gene Schley, many nieces and nephews and friends and his very good friend Colleen Weitz.
God Speed Dad.
A Celebration of Ed’s life will be held at a later date.
