NEWHALL, Edmunde Eugene “Ned” May 26, 1927 January 30, 2013
Ned Newhall passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at the age of 85 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Beth Newhall; daughter Susan Newhall, of London, England; grandchildren, Damien Chevassut-Newhall and Diane Chevassut-Newhall, both of France; sister-in-law Leith Leslie (Bruce McAllister) of Victoria, BC; and family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Van & Estelle Newhall and brother Stuart. Ned was born and raised in Calgary. He attended Earl Grey Elementary School, Rideau Park School and Central Memorial High School. He received his Bachelor of Engineering Physics from the University of Alberta. While studying there, he met the love of his life, Beth Somerville and shortly thereafter they were married. Ned continued his studies at Stanford University and the University of Toronto where he received his PhD in Electrical Engineering. The first 11 yrs of his professional career started in telecommunications with Bell Telephone Laboratories, New Jersey. Where he co-developed the Farmer-Newhall patent, Token Passing Ring, LAN Standards. Ned then returned to Toronto as a tenured professor at the University of Toronto followed by starting his own business in telecommunications. They retired to Calgary and connected with old friends, notably as a member of the F.O.F. club. The last 12 years, he was a loving caregiver to Beth, who is suffering from Alzheimers. Throughout Ned’s life he had a great spirit of adventure, sense of humor and persistent optimism. Private Family services will be held for Ned.
