In loving memory of Elizabeth “Betty” Berting (nee Harcourt), who passed away on June 17, 2023, at her home in Calgary with family by her side. She is in our hearts and in our thoughts every day. Betty was born on May 16, 1936 to Fred Harcourt and Anna Brunn, who farmed west of LeRoy in the Humboldt district of Saskatchewan.
Betty married Andrew “Andy” Berting on November 10, 1956 at Prince George, B.C., where their first three children, Rod, Laurie and Doreen were born. They then moved to Calgary, where their youngest, Al, was born.
Betty worked at a bank, babysat, had boarders, did flower and flyer deliveries, and worked for many years with the Alberta Liquor Control Board, first in retail and later providing training on a new computer program at stores throughout Alberta. She was also a Brownie leader, a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada and volunteered many years with Holy Name Catholic Church, where she spent endless hours counting the collections. She and Andy also worked as custodians for the parish.
Betty enjoyed welcoming guests into her home, the more the merrier. There was always a seat for an extra guest or two at Betty’s table. An accomplished cook, she excelled at German cuisine that her husband Andy especially enjoyed. She truly loved her garden, taking care of her lady slippers and heritage rose bushes, and treasuring the first blooms of sweet peas every year. Betty also enjoyed crocheting which she sold at craft fairs, reading, playing card games including crib and canasta, working on puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She and Andy also enjoyed many trips to visit family in Saskatchewan, as well as trips to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and the other western states, including visiting family members in California. They took their grandchildren on numerous trips over the years. Despite living with Parkinson’s for nearly 20 years, Betty was known for her positive attitude, humorous zingers, determination, and her faith.
Betty was survived by her husband Andy and their children Rod, Laurie (Geoff) Steele, Doreen and Al (Randi), her sister-in-law Bea Harcourt as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Anna (Brunn) Harcourt and siblings Edith (Ted) Flory, Dick (Pauline), Tom (Nellie), Bill (Kelly), Jack and Margaret (Al) Beitel.
If desired, memorial tributes may be made to the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta or a charity of your choosing.
