The family of Eunice Scutchings of Calgary is saddened to report the passing of their mother, grandmother and great grandmother at the age of 96 years. She was surrounded by close family at the end and knew how much she was loved by so many. Mom had a deep and abiding faith in everlasting life as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, so we are also joyful for Mom that she will be reunited with those who have predeceased her including our dad Chester (2005), her mother Lillian (1928) and father Herbert (1958), ten siblings and other extended family and friends.
Our mother grew up in the depression and wartime years raised by her dear sisters due to the early loss of her mother. She was gifted with an amazing singing talent, legend has it that she began singing while still in her crib. From an early age, she was on stage including Saturday night dances in Lloydminster where many soldiers in attendance were headed into battle. She met our Dad during that time and they married shortly upon his return from wartime service. Three children followed, first Judy, then Debbie and Ron. Deeply artistic, Mom had a knack for turning every family home into a welcoming place which was no easy feat due to the frequent moves required by Dad’s oilfield career. She was also involved with church and community activities where ever they resided, continuing to share her vocal gifts in so many ways.
In their later years, Mom and Dad enjoyed retirement visits to Arizona and of course, she was front and centre on stage, with our Dad proudly filming her many performances. She became known as “The Canadian Songbird”! In the summer, they enjoyed lake time for many years, sharing this with the ever-expanding family of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mom has left behind many who loved her: Judy (Mel) and children Cameron (Rachael), Jayna (Guy), Kevin, Meghan (Jerry) and Spencer; Debbie (Gilles) and children Jeff (Stacey), Steven (Angela) and David (Christine); and Ron (Loretta) and children Chris and Jon (Courtney). Numerous great grandchildren will miss her including Madeline, Charlize, Evolette, Amelia, Michael, Cody, Iipi, Jerrhan, Cyrus, Chloe, Olivia, Violet, Pearl, Julie, Austin and Logan.
Special thanks to the caring staff at Chinook Care Centre, Park Place Central for their loving care of our Mom.
A private family service will be held to celebrate Eunice’s wonderful life. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Mom will be missed by many.
“I’ll be seeing you
In all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through
I’ll be seeing you
In every lovely summer’s day
In everything that’s light and gay
I’ll always think of you that way
I’ll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new
I’ll be looking at the moon
But I’ll be seeing you”
