Joan Pilling passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at the age of 81 years. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 61 years Grant Pilling; Their four children Rick Pilling (Pattie) of Cochrane, Dwan James (Brett) of Edmonton, LaWana Ogden (Reid) of Chestermere, and Jeffrey Pilling (Stephanie) of Auckland, New Zealand; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Joan is also survived by two sisters Sharon Miner (Don) of American Fork, UT and Judy Fletcher (Duane) of Post Falls, ID; and many other relatives and friends. Joan was predeceased by her parents Bessie and Thomas Pratt and one brother Tom Pratt. Joan was born and raised in Lethbridge, AB. Not long after completing high school she met Grant Pilling and they were married in 1954. The following year they moved to Calgary and in 1959 built their home in the Fairview community where they have lived since. When the children were old enough, Joan began working part-time in the China department of Woodward’s where she worked for 22 years. Joan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. Joan and Grant served in the Canada Calgary Mission for 9 1/2 years advising missionaries on the care of their apartments. Joan was a dedicated member of “Daughter’s of the Utah Pioneers”. She was an excellent seamstress. Joan loved cooking and many of her favourite dishes will be missed. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and will be dearly remembered by all who knew her. Relatives and friends are invited to visit and pay their respects at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Heritage Chapel (935 Heritage Drive SW, Calgary) on Friday, May 29 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the same Church on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 11:00 am with a visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 am. Graveside service will be held at the Leavitt Cemetery, Leavitt, AB at 4:00 pm.
