Grant Pilling passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at the age of 93 years. He will be dearly missed by his children Rick Pilling (Pattie) of Cochrane, LaWana Ogden (Reid) of Calgary, and Jeffrey Pilling (Stephanie) of Auckland, New Zealand; son-in-law Brett James of Calgary; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren. Grant is also survived by his brother Moyle Pilling (Ann) of Magrath, AB; and many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife Joan, daughter Dwan and sisters Veda and Garda.
Grant was born in Cardston, AB and raised on the family farm in Leavitt, AB. After serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England he returned home where he met the love of his life Joan. They were married in 1954 and eventually settled in Calgary. Grant worked in many different jobs throughout the years including as an insurance investigator, driving a propane truck, working at a golf course and then started his career in construction as a carpenter where he worked into his 90’s. Grant was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings throughout his life. He served with his wife Joan in the Canada Calgary Mission for 9 1/2 years advising missionaries on the care of their apartments and also at the Calgary Temple for many years. Grant loved reading, serving others and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and will be dearly remembered by all who knew him.
A Visitation will be held for Grant at Pierson’s Forest Lawn Chapel (4121 – 17 Avenue SE, Calgary) on Friday, August 18, 2023 from 7:00-9:00 pm. A Graveside Service will then be held at Leavitt Cemetery (Leavitt, AB) on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 12:00 pm. The graveside service will be webcasted and can be viewed at this link:
