Harlan Ingwall Sundal, 85, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2023, surrounded by family in Calgary, Alberta.
He was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on April 16, 1938, to Ingwall and Gladys Sundal. He was raised in a loving home with two sisters and one brother and was 10 years old when the family moved to Red Deer, Alberta. As a teenager, Harlan had a part-time job delivering telegraphs on bicycle. This was his first introduction to bottled pop which he could not live without until the day he died.
Harlan attended the University of Alberta to obtain his bachelor’s degree. It was while he was there that he met Carole, working at the library in the University, and began a whirlwind romance and married on December 21, 1961.They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary in December 2021. When they finished their schooling, they made Calgary, Alberta, their home where they raised their four wonderful children.
Harlan’s life was dedicated to serving in the community and the Church. Carole and Harlan served together on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as employment specialist’s helping people looking for employment or those looking for improved employment. Harlan spent many years serving in the Church in various roles of leadership including Elders Quorum, Bishoprics, and Stake callings. His favorite service in the Church was always working in the Temple, which he did for many years.
In 1974, he received his designation as a Chartered Accountant. He was a partner at Hudson & Company Chartered Accountants specializing as a Bankruptcy Trustee until he retired. He loved helping people out of financial difficulties and passed the deep interest of finances on to all his children.
Harlan also achieved his private pilot’s license and flew his Bonanza v-tail plane all over North America. Some of his favorites were the Osh Kosh air show, flying to Alaska and weekly flights to work in Red Deer. Harlan also had a passion for photography and enjoyed RVing and the outdoors.
Harlan was pre-deceased by his loving wife in October 2022; and his sisters, Evelyn, and Marion. He is survived by his children, Sandra (Scott), Leah (Gerald), Richard (Hyunsun), Matthew (Judy), and his brother, Ivan. He is survived by 12 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all.
Funeral services will be held on Friday May 12th at 12:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Cochrane Chapel (1100 Gleneagles Drive, Cochrane, AB) with viewing prior to the funeral beginning at 11:00am. Graveside service to follow at Cochrane Cemetery.
