Rod is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 56 years Shirley; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marion and Doug; mother-in-law Mary (“Gert”); sisters Margaret (Neil), Esther (Jerry), and Martha; a brother Robert; and sister-in-law Margarette. Rod also leaves behind many very special nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends. Rod is predeceased by parents Mervin and Blanche; his brothers Willard, Chet, Lloyd, Wes and Ben; sisters Mary, Ruth and Rachelle; nephew Robert; nieces Susan and Sandra; and father-in-law Jimmy; sisters-in-law Addie and Helen; brother-in-law Jerry. Rod was born in Didsbury, AB, and later moved to Calgary where he worked and met the love of his life his wife and lifelong companion Shirley. As family was so very important to the both of them, throughout the years Rod and Shirley lovingly opened their home and hearts to many of their nieces and nephews who looked to them for guidance, understanding, encouragement and support. Rod and Shirley shared a love of traveling and enjoyed many trips together, at times just the two of them and others with friends and family. Rod had an affinity for horses, the rodeo and the Calgary Stampede and was also an immense fan of the Calgary Flames and Stampeders. He had a love for the outdoors spending countless hours working in the yard tending to the flowers, trees and garden. Rod spent over 50 years in the Commercial Glass Industry where he was well respected and during that time helped many young apprentices. Upon retirement Rod became the proud owner and operator of Elite Glass (1995) Ltd. Rod was a gracious, loving, earnest and humble man who loved to tell stories and keep people smiling. He was known for his wit and sense of humor which, at times, included jokes only a few would understand or love. Rod walked through life with a big heart, courage and strength when dealing with adversity and a true belief in the goodness of others. He will be sorely missed by all those that knew and loved him. The family would like to thank Dr. Couillard and Dr. Ferland and the special nurses of the Foothills ICU Resuscitation Unit C for their exceptional care of Rod and the compassion shown towards the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ICU Resuscitation Unit of the Calgary Foothills Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at Pierson’s Forest Lawn Chapel (4121 17 Ave. S.E. 403-235-3602) Wednesday July 9th at 2:00pm with a reception to follow. “He was a good husband and friend and I can’t imagine life without him.
