Hortensia Victoria Bowens

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Hortensia Victoria Bowens, affectionately known as Tensa, of Calgary, Alberta. She left this world as gently and quietly as she lived, passing peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 28, 2025.

Hortensia is survived by her four children: Varden Morris and his wife Tania, Julian Morris, Joan Morris Johnson, and Stacy-Ann Francis; ten grandchildren: Ackeelah Young, Roshane Betton, Gianna Morris-Martinelli, Kendra Morris, Ruth Harris, Makeda Morris, Kimani Crawford, Kahmoi Crawford, Janae Crawford, and Renalta Smith; her cherished grand-dog, Teddy Pomeranian; and three great-grandchildren, Akirrah Graham, Nova Crawford and Miles Martinelli. She also leaves behind her siblings, Glasford Henry and Duncan Fisher, along with numerous extended family members. Hortensia was predeceased by her mother, Matilda Robinson; her father, Bertrand Bowens; and her beloved grandfather, Rueben Bowens.

Born in St. Mary, Jamaica, on December 8, 1941, Hortensia immigrated to Canada in June 1996, where she made Calgary her home. Hortensia lived an unimpeachable life, guided by the teachings of the God she so dearly loved and dedicated to serve everyone she encountered, as evidenced by her 27-year career as a Care Aide. In this world, gentleness, kindness, and generosity are often mistaken for weakness - but these were the traits that defined her, and she was anything but weak.

Despite life’s challenges, Hortensia never complained. Instead, she made the best of what she was given, gave more than she took, took only what she needed, and found joy in life’s true treasures: God, family, friendship, and the kindness she shared with others. Hortensia will be deeply missed, but the morals and values she instilled in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will ensure that her legacy lives on. Rest well, mother. You have left an indelible mark on this world through your countless good deeds. Well done!

A viewing will be held on Thursday March 13, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pierson’s Funeral Services, 4121 - 17 Avenue SE, Calgary.

The funeral service will be held on Friday March 14, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic) of Calgary, 2860 - 38 Street SW, Calgary where a final viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will take place immediately following the service at Rocky View Garden of Peace Cemetery, 243208 Garden Road, Calgary. Guests are warmly invited to a reception at the church following the interment.
