On Tuesday, November 16, 2021 Mr. James (Jim) Robert Penn, beloved husband of the late Helen Penn (nee Simpson) of Calgary, Alberta passed away at the age of 87 years.
Jim was born on November 2, 1934 in Calgary to parents James William Penn and Leslie Bernice Penn (nee Lewis). He was the third of four children, including Dave, Billie and Donna. Jim was raised in Sunnyside, and attended Hillhurst Junior High School and Western Canada High School. He was a proud Calgarian, and lived his entire life in the city. Jim was very close to his eldest brother Dave, and they shared many outdoor activities over the years, including hunting and fishing trips in Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Arizona. Reflecting his interest in the outdoors, Jim started Penn Taxidermy in the mid-1950’s and successfully operated this business for many years. Jim met Helen Simpson and they were married in 1956 for 58 years until her passing in 2014 . They had three children, Dave, Jimmy (deceased) and Kelly. Jim and Helen shared many outdoor adventures, and also became active members of the Calgary Trap & Skeet Club, with Jim serving as President in the early 1960’s. Jim and Helen were very entrepreneurial, and started a number of other successful small businesses in Calgary which they jointly operated over the years. Jim was a wonderful father to Dave and Kelly, and a much beloved Grandpa to Megan, Alison, Caitlyn, Emma, Taylor and Ashley. Jim was much respected by his many friends over the course of his life, and is greatly missed by his family who loved him dearly.
Jim will be loving remembered by his children Dave and his wife Armine, Kelly and her husband Derrick with their children Caitlyn, Emma, Taylor, and Ashley all of Calgary; as well as grandchildren Megan (Josh) of Washington, DC, Alison of Burlington, Ontario; his siblings Billie Summers (Larry), Donna Anderson (Andy); nieces Sandy O’Connor, Cathy Humphreys (Russ); as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Besides Jim’s wife Helen, he is predeceased by his parents Leslie and James Penn, his son Jimmy Penn, brother Dave F. Penn, and sister in law Margaret Penn.
Cremation has occurred, and in due course a small celebration of his life is planned.
