With sadness we announce that James Larry Nieckar passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 69.
Born in Invermay, Saskatchewan, James later moved with his family to Calgary, Alberta where a majority of his life was spent in the Forest Lawn area. He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School, Bishop Kidd Jr. High School and St. Mary High School in Calgary. Upon completing school, he worked in the construction and manufacturing sectors, as well various restaurants and grocery stores. James moved with his family to live on the acreage in Chestermere where he helped with the upkeep and took loving care of his aging parents.
As a young man, James was an altar server at Holy Trinity Parish. He often helped with maintenance work at the church and enjoyed volunteering at various church events, especially the pancake breakfasts, and BBQ's.
Throughout his life, James was afforded the opportunity to travel. He visited many European countries and travelled to various places in the United States. James' travelling came to an end when he decided to stay home to help his parents in their declining health. When his father passed away, James, along with his sisters, shared in the care of their mother.
A private person, with a quiet gentle nature and subtle wit, allowed James to fit right in with different groups of people, whether they were friends or colleagues. His brother Ed shared that "James was a good brother and although he was a little shy, once you got him talking, he always had lots to say". James was aware of current events and was always ready to participate in a discussion. He had many friends and enjoyed his time with them. He enjoyed his afternoon radio programs while sitting with his cat, Willy, on the golf cart.
James will be lovingly remembered by his eight brothers and three sisters, David (Virginia) Nieckar, Gerald (Karen) Nieckar, Edward Nieckar, Michael Nieckar, Caroline (Donato) Ranallo, Joseph (Sherry) Nieckar, Thomas (Carrie) Nieckar, Stanley Nieckar, Mary Ann Nieckar, Suzanne (Mark) Thomson, and Christopher (Paula) Nieckar; several cousins, many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Henry and Nellie Nieckar.
James was generous with his time and always made himself available to help anyone in need, without complaint.
We will all miss that about him.
