Johannes Boogerd Jr. passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 74 years. He was married to the love of his life, Emma for 47 years; and was the most devoted father to Benjamin and Johannes III (JR).
Johannes (or “John” as he preferred) was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on June 10, 1949, to parents, Johannes Sr. and Martina. Soon after he was joined by younger brothers, Leonard and Tony. After spending a good portion of their childhood in Rotterdam, the family decided to move to Canada in the late 50s and chose Calgary to be their final destination - where he completed his education all the way through to college.
John had a large array of interests and hobbies over the years, some even turning into careers. He was one of the early pioneers in emergency response in 1970s Alberta, having his own private ambulance company. He was a paramedic. He also did income taxes by trade for many years, having served thousands of people in that time; many of whom turned into family friends. He was also very proud of the work he did at Westjet, where he was primarily a problem solver for some of the more extreme situations.
Alongside all of that, his truest passions were his family, seeing the world, aviation and collecting model trains - something he’d been interested since he was a young boy. While he’d been able to visit many countries during his lifetime, his favorite places on Earth were Hawaii, the Philippines, California, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, Australia, Mexico, Germany, Paris, and his homeland the Netherlands.
John is survived by wife Emma; sons, Benjamin and Johannes III “JR”; best friend, Smokey; and brothers, Leonard and Tony. He was predeceased by parents, Johannes Sr. and Martina.
He loved helping people, whether they were friends, family or strangers, not for the recognition or a pat on the back - but simply because it was the right thing to do. He has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.
We will be honoring him and saying our ‘see-you-agains’ with a Public Visitation at Pierson’s Funeral Home (4121 17th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 12:00 p.m.
