John Rupert Lyall Taylor

With great sadness we announce the passing of John Rupert Lyall Taylor on Saturday, December 21, 2024, in Vulcan, Alberta, at the age of 88. 

John was born on July 4, 1936, in Selkirk, Manitoba, at Selkirk General Hospital. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from St. John's College (University of Manitoba) in 1958 and married Diana Elmhirst Lye on July 2, 1959.

John articled as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1959 and moved to Calgary in 1968. He had a diverse career as an accountant, stockbroker, H&R Block branch manager, and President of Ibex Oil. 

He coached his sons, Ken and Hugh-John, in basketball, hockey, and soccer. A lifelong basketball enthusiast, he played on a Senior Men’s team in Winnipeg and later coached a successful team in Calgary, many of whose players were from the Calgary Stampeders Football team. John was also an active member of the Vulcan Community Services Centre, where he enjoyed socializing and playing pool.

After retiring in 2003, John and Diana fulfilled her wish to live in a small town, moving to Vulcan, Alberta. He served as Deacon or Elder at various churches, including St. James Anglican and Victory churches in Calgary, as well as St. Aldhelm's and Living Word Fellowship in Vulcan.

John is survived by his children, Kenneth (wife Imelda) Taylor of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Hugh-John Taylor of Lethbridge, Alberta, and Margaret Taylor of Calgary, Alberta; grandchildren, Alyssa (and husband Rob) all of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Madison of Calgary, Alberta; great-grandchildren, Imelia and Xavier all of Winnipeg, Manitoba; sister, Patricia Matheson of St. Catherines, Ontario; brother, Hugh Taylor of Deep River, Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife, Diana Taylor (nee Lye) 2018; and his parents, Rupert Taylor and Gladys Taylor (nee Lyall).

A Memorial Service will be held for John at Pierson's Forest Lawn Chapel (4121 - 17 Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta) on Saturday, January 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Mountain Time. Interment will take place in the spring at Vulcan Cemetery. The date is to be determined.
