On Friday, October 4, 2024, we said goodbye to Lawrence Wesley Hanson, a beloved husband to Joyce, on what would have been their 66th wedding anniversary. Born in rural Saskatchewan in 1935, Lawrence lived a rich and fulfilling life, grounded in his love for family, his dedicated career as a banker, and his deep faith.
For the past six years, Lawrence faced the challenges of dementia, transitioning to long-term care as his memory and abilities gradually changed. Yet, even amid these challenges, his gentle presence and quiet pride remained. We found new ways to connect, visiting regularly to share stories, laughter, and cherished photos from home.
Lawrence's banking career with RBC and Canadian Western Bank spanned several decades, but his true dedication was always to his family. After retiring, Lawrence and Joyce settled in Calgary, where they enjoyed breathtaking mountain views from their living room and made regular trips to visit family across British Columbia, Saskatchewan, California, Oklahoma, and Toronto. He was especially proud of his Norwegian roots, and often spoke fondly of a “trip of a lifetime” to Norway with Joyce, his sister Eileen, and brother-in-law Jack.
He leaves behind a legacy of love through his wife, Joyce; children Karalee (Pat), Daren (Liz), Cheryl (Ron); grandchildren, Kali, Ethan, Lauren, Ashleigh, Carling, Olivia, and Ben; siblings, Margaret (Ron) Unger, Eileen Rowswell, Oscar (Carole) Hanson; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Conrad and Martha; siblings, Alice, Sproxton, Dorothy Berg, Marlowe Hanson, and Marvin Hanson.
Lawrence will be deeply missed for his quiet strength, unwavering love for his family, and his profound appreciation for the natural world. He leaves a lasting legacy of love and faith that we will carry forward, keeping him forever close in our hearts.
The family would like to extend their heart felt thanks to the staff at Covenant Care - St. Teresa Place for the care they provided Lawrence these past six years.
A memorial service will be held for Lawrence at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024 at Pierson's Funeral Service Ltd., 4121 - 17 Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta. Interment of Lawrence's urn will follow at the Prairie Sky Cemetery, 12800 - 100 Street SE, Calgary.
