It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lilian Pauline Slupski (Harvey) on Friday, February 20, 2015 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Born on May 25, 1922 in Cardiff, Wales U.K., the eldest daughter of seven children, she was pre-deceased by two brothers, one sister, one son-in-law, numerous brothers and sisters-in-laws and her husband Michael. She is survived by her two sons Peter (Sue) and Alan(Cory); daughter Patricia and granddaughter Jennifer Dawn. She is also survived by two brothers in Wales Alan (Sheila), Peter(Ann), and a sister Irene in Calgary along with numerous nieces and nephews. Lilian immigrated to Canada in 1946 as a War Bride and began to raise her own family with Michael and she helped provide as best as she could, often sacrificing time and needs for herself so that others were looked after first. She spent many years working at the Salvation Army Children’s Cottage assisting with the care of the children living in the homes and she created some strong and lasting relationships with both residence and staff. Lilian was a devoted member of the Anglican Church, Saint Martin’s Parish and attended regularly until her health prohibited her from continuing. We are sure that in her later years she missed these very important parts of both her spiritual and social life. Her pride and joy was her vegetable garden in the backyard and her flowers beds, where she would spend the whole day weeding and keeping things in order. Lilian had a soft spot in her heart for all her four legged friends, including many family dogs who adored her. A few of the neighbours who would regularly walk their dogs in front of her house, would reluctantly have the dogs stop, sit and not continue until Lilian came out of the house to give them a cookie and a pat on the head. The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff at the Rocky Ridge Retirement Community- Dalhousie Unit, where Lilian was a resident for the last 39 months. They made her stay there as friendly, accommodating and comfortable as possible, with care and attention to the family, that was greatly appreciated. For those who may wish to pay their respects to Lilian, a small reception to celebrate her life will be held at Pierson’s Forest Lawn Chapel (4121 – 17 Ave S.E.), Calgary, AB on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at 1:00pm. At Lilian’s request, her cremated remains will be laid to rest along with her husband’s at the “Field of Honor” Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 – 4 St.N.W.), Calgary, AB on May 25, 2015 at 1:30pm.
