Manfred Walter Thoms

Manfred Thoms passed away at Southwood Care Centre in Calgary on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at the age of 91 years.

He is predeceased by his wife of 47 years at the time of her passing, Rosa and survived by his children, Ronald Thoms of Okotoks & Patricia (Richard) Fiedler of Calgary; two grandchildren, Junlin Manfred Thoms & Athena-Rose Huang Yan Thoms; two brothers, Bernhard (Ilona) Thoms & Meinhard (Dolores) Thoms; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends especially Anne and her family who also cared for and supported Manfred over the past several years. Manfred was born in Berlin, Germany. As a young boy, he did some work as a child model for a department store catalog. When he was 21, he immigrated to Canada via Regina before settling in Calgary. His brothers soon followed. In 1955, he met Rosa at a German/Canadian Club event and they were married the following year. Together they raised their family and worked as partners in their painting business. For about five years in the 60's they lived in San Francisco before coming back to Calgary then moved to Water Valley in 2001. Their Water Valley home was a labour of love that they, along with family and friends built from the ground up. Manfred was a drummer in a band that played big band music and he played into his 80's. He loved his garden and being in the outdoors. He was also a model train collector. Manfred liked to eat healthy and take care of himself and encouraged others to do the same. He was helpful, caring and giving. If friends so desire, they may make a donation in Manfred's name to a charity of their choice.

A Funeral Service will be held for Manfred at Pierson's Forest Lawn Chapel (4121 - 17 Avenue SE, Calgary) on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 11:00 am. A Graveside Service will follow at Water Valley Cemetery.
