Maren Elizabeth Boates

September 23, 1977 — January 22, 2022

Maren Boates of Calgary, Alberta passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the age of 44 years.

Maren Elizabeth Boates began her life in Kentville, Nova Scotia – 7:47 AM on September 23, 1977, to the welcoming parents of Gary Boates and Janet Peterson. She was 6 weeks early, which she claimed she did on purpose. Early on it was evident that she had a quick wit and strong will – she brought light & life to any situation which was a quality that attracted people to Maren her entire life.

Maren enjoyed a wide variety of activities as a child including biking, ATV riding, snowmobiling with her beloved grampa, swimming, gymnastics, and more. While in Brandon as a child she could do cart wheels and handsprings with ease… she was a natural athlete. She loved the outdoors and always seemed to be active – something that never stopped in her. She also learned piano as a child along with her sister Annelie, and learned the flute.

Following life in Brandon, Maren’s mom moved the girls to Dauphin, MB to be closer to their grandfather (VT). For the next 6 years Maren lived there until she graduated high school. It was during these formative teenage years that Maren instilled in her sister that life was tough, and you needed to be tough back. She also taught Annelie that life could also be really fun – and to live life in the moment. They spent many fun days with their grandpa of course, which broke their hearts when he passed away.

Maren moved to Calgary to attend DeVry College – where she graduated with a degree in business operations followed by her Canadian Securities course. To make ends meet while in school she worked at Cowboys. It was here that she met her best friend Shannon Prestagard in 1996. They were best friends from that day on. Maren’s sister Annelie and her mother Janet soon joined her in Calgary.

Maren was quick to befriend people and take them on a ride with her that they will never forget. She loved animals, clothing & fashion – particularly if it was pink, jewelry of all kinds, The Seattle Seahawks, traveling as she could – spending over a year in Germany, introducing her sister to hot yoga – a love she has to this day. Her smile was beautiful and her laugh contagious. What we would give to see and hear that just one more time! She had a special way of checking in on people and asking how they were doing. Sadly we will hear that no more.

Maren was predeceased by her grandmother Valentina Peterson, grandpa “VT” Peterson, uncles Victor Peterson and Craig Peterson. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her father Gary Boates, stepmother Cethlyn MacKay, sister Annelie Miazga, brother in law Mike Miazga, niece Xenia and nephews Nikolai and Xander Miazga, her mother Janet Peterson, “more than you know”.
