On Wednesday, January 12, 2022 MaryAnn Goldthorp, beloved wife of Thomas Goldthorp of Calgary, Alberta passed away at the age of 61 years.
MaryAnn Salonen was born January 26th, 1960 in Montreal, and held a great love of the city her entire life. She and her twin sister Elizabeth (Sassa) were raised by their mother, Kerttu, and their older siblings Marja, Esa, and Ahti.
At sixteen years old, she and her sister were baptized as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She graduated from Centennial High School in 1977, and went on to study at what was then Rick’s college in Rexburg, Idaho. In 1982 she was married to Thomas Goldthorp and moved back to Montreal, where they had two sons, Jordan and Troy.
The family moved to Calgary in 1991, where Mary raised her family as a devoted mother and volunteered her time with her church. She especially loved serving in Primary with young children, and in the Young Women’s groups where her influence continues to be felt today.
MaryAnn loved young children, and took great joy in reading, singing, and teaching to little souls. Over the years, she opened her home to several foster children to provide a stable, caring place to grow. Hailey and Bryon came to her care at eight and nine years old, stayed with us for over ten years, and are still family today.
MaryAnn loved flowers, and spent considerable time each year picking out and planting gardens. She loved to visit flower nurseries, and could not leave them without getting at least a small plant to bring home. She always liked to be out and about, to go into town or down to the mall, if just to get a treat, browse, and people-watch. She and Tom would often go on long car rides just to explore and see different places around the city. It was not unusual in recent years for the two to jump in the car on a whim and end up visiting grandkids in Edmonton.
MaryAnn leaves behind four grandchildren: Benjamin, Lincoln, Finn, and Hudson. She loved being a grandmother, and once again getting to sing and read and cuddle her little children. They love her dearly and miss her as fiercely as we all do.
A Funeral Service will be held for MaryAnn at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Bow Valley Chapel (2526 – 24 Avenue NW , Calgary) on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 10:00 am.
