It is profound sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew LaVar Cote, our beloved son, brother, grandson, uncle, cousin, and friend. Matthew was born on May 10, 1998 in Lancaster, California. He was an energetic ball of occasionally misguided enthusiasm and gave all of himself for the things he cared for. As a little boy, Matthew cherished his independence and took every opportunity to show us all what he was capable of. This carried on into his adult years. Matthew had an incredibly expressive face and could light up any room with a smile that warmed your heart.
From an early age he was dedicated to succeeding with his education , and although he had many opportunities to take an easier route he was determined to graduate alongside his peers. He set many goals for himself throughout his life and was an inspiring example of perseverance.
Matthew had an adventurous spirit and a great love for other cultures. He worked hard and was finally able to take his dream trip to Japan last year, bringing to life the history and culture that he admired for so long. He had a rich love for people and was always eager to listen to others, share his thoughts, and for a few moments make you feel like you were the only person in the room.
Matthew loved being outside, hiking and exploring the natural beauty all around him. Since his trip to Tokyo, he had a deep appreciation for authentic Japanese sushi. He enjoyed making people happy. Matthew loved spending his time playing video games, not to disconnect, but to bond with those he cared about and make new friends along the way. He cherished time with his friends as well as providing acts of service to anyone he could.
Matthew passed away on August 22, 2020 at the age of 22. Matthew will be remembered by his parents, Marcel and Shelley Cote, siblings, Alyssa Roberts (Brock), Ashley Linfield (Peter), Chloe Norton (Brody), Jordan Cote, and Jocelynn Green (Zenan), nieces Cordelia, Zephirin, Lydia, Stevie-Jay and Collins, and nephews, Emmett, Benson and Desmond.
We love you Matthew.
