Mayne Root passed away suddenly surrounded by his family on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 73 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Rose Lynn; four children, Lisa Root (Grant), Tina Hornberger (Doug), Becky Walker (Jeff) and David Root (Marysol); eight grandchildren Kristian (Kayla), Kyle (Cassie), Brookley, Kayla, Kyara, Alexa, Jaxton and Riley; brother Dan Root (Deana); brother-in-law Dale Dietrich; Rosie’s family the Piersons; the very large extended Root family and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Jasper & Evelyn Root; sister Donna Dietrich; and nephew Dory Dietrich.
Mayne was born in Carmangay, AB and raised in Cowley and Travers. The family moved to Champion and then to Calgary where he attended & graduated from Crescent Heights High School. After finishing High School he began attending the University of Calgary and also joined the Calgary Police Service. It was during this time that Mayne joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has been an important part of his life.
While dancing with a church group Mayne met a beautiful young lady, Rose Lynn Pierson, who was accompanying them on the piano. They began dating and then were married in 1974. As a young couple, they moved to Utah so that Mayne could attend Brigham Young University where he earned a Communications Degree. Upon returning to Calgary, Mayne worked briefly at CHQR before returning to the Calgary Police Service he loved, spending 20 more years before retiring in 2002.
Mayne loved his family and they were his priority. He never missed any of the huge Root family gatherings which were a highlight for him and kept him connected to his family. That tradition continued when he and Rosie were blessed with their four children. They spent much of their time with extended family during holidays and vacations.
Mayne loved people and loved to help them. This was evident in all of his service work, within the Church he held many positions of responsibility, but also in the community through his work in the Calgary Police Service, the Alberta Motor Transport Association, The Calgary Stampede Parade Committee and numerous other opportunities that surfaced regularly.
He will be remembered for his positive attitude, great sense of humour, his smile and wonderful hugs, his integrity, honesty, wisdom and kindness. We will miss him more than words can say.
A public viewing will be held on Monday, December 4th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Pierson’s Funeral Home (4121 – 17 Avenue SE, Calgary).
