Melvin Daryl McPhail

November 17, 1942 — February 22, 2025

Calgary, Alberta

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Melvin Daryl “Mel” McPhail on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the age of 83. Born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1942, Mel attended Queen Elizabeth High School and remained a proud member of his community throughout his life.

Mel had a deep love for dancing and never missed an opportunity to share his joy on the dance floor. He and his former wife, Gail, spent countless evenings perfecting their steps at local dances. Together, they had a beloved daughter, Lisa.

A passionate sportsman, Mel excelled in baseball, golf, football, bowling, and hockey. His love for music also led him to become a dedicated vinyl record collector.

For over 35 years, Mel proudly worked as a letter carrier for Canada Post, dedicating himself to his job with integrity and commitment.

In retirement, he remained deeply involved in his community, spending over 20 years as an active member of the Chinook Heritage Club and the Booster Club. He volunteered at numerous events, including Stampede Day and Winterfest, and became especially known for his signature pancake flipping at the club’s breakfasts—bringing joy and laughter to all who attended.

Mel will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Schnarr, of Santa Ana, California; his sisters, Marilyn McPhail and Daneda Bleackley, both of Calgary, Alberta; and Lisa’s mother, Marjorie “Gail” Bruneau, of Calgary, Alberta. He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Marjorie (née Moore) McPhail.

If desired, Memorial Donations may be made in Melvin’s honour to Chinook Chapter Heritage Club (P.O. Box 36118 Lakeview RPO, Calgary, AB T3E 7C6) www.heritageclub.ca/chinook.
