Born on January 22, 1961 in the Calgary General Hospital, Michael ‘Mike’ John Pople lived a life filled with passion, love, and unwavering dedication. He peacefully passed away on Friday September 8, 2023 at The Foothills Medical Centre, surrounded by his loved ones. In his final moments, Mike was comforted by his stepdaughter, Sara; sister, Karin; and his dear friend, Laura (White) Houghton.
Mike is survived by his sister, Karin Pople; stepdaughter, Sara Shephard; along with her children, Savannah, Dominick, Caydence and Mylah; stepdaughter, Tana (Pablo) Olmedo; along with her children, Andreanna and Julian; stepmother, Dorie Pople; and his aunt, Nancy (Colin) Wiese; and their children, Shalin, Marel, and Bryson. He was predeceased by his mother, Elsa Pople; father, Fred Pople; and stepdaughter, Jodi Shephard.
Mike’s love for his friends was unmatched with many friendships spanning over 40 years. He was a passionate drag racer, participating is the sport since 1977. Known as a formidable competitor, Mike accumulated over 50 trophies, awards, and championships throughout his career. His generosity knew no bounds, always willing to drop everything to help a fellow racer.
With a wealth of experience as a licensed heavy-duty mechanic, Mike dedicated many years to his family business and worked full time on many race teams over the years. His skills extended to building hot rods, race cars, engines, and transmissions. His love for cars began in the 1960s when he would watch oval track racing with his parents. Over the years, he developed a fondness for BMX bikes, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, ATVs, and anything with wheels.
In his free time, Mike enjoyed fishing and camping, particularly in the serene landscapes of Spillimacheen, BC. His kind soul attracted both people and animals to him effortlessly, creating lasting connections wherever he went. At the end of a long day at the track, he found solace in a Crown and Pepsi, never settling for “that Coke shit”.
Mike Pople will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of passion, generosity, and unwavering loyalty. In celebration of his life, a memorial service will be held on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society
– an organization close to Mike’s heart.
