May 5, 1953 – Dier El Ahmar, Lebanon
July 2, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with tremendous grief that our family announces the sudden passing of Mona Sleilaty, beloved wife of Georges Sleilaty of Calgary, AB. Mona returned to the arms of the Lord on July 2, 2022, at the age of 69 years.
Mona grew up in a large family in Lebanon and was very close to her parents, and nine siblings, who she loved tremendously and remained close to all her life. In 1978 Mona married Georges, the love of her life, and they immigrated to Canada in 1979 to pursue their dreams of a better life for their future children. Mona and Georges welcomed their first child, Angela, into the world soon after arriving in Canada, followed by their younger children, Julie, and Tony.
Mona was a resilient, hard-working, and successful hair stylist and business owner, who opened her Silk Cut Salon in 1993, which she operated for 11 years. Mona’s clients loved her for her warm and engaging personality, as seen in the loyalty shown by many long-term clients who valued Mona’s company as much as her skill as a stylist.
Mona loved gardening and spent many hours caring for her beautiful gardens and flowers. Above all, Mona loved her family and wanted nothing more than to take care of them and make them happy. She loved to cook them delicious meals and the baked goods they loved growing up, and she would fill her children’s fridges with fresh fruit and vegetables every week, simply because she loved them and thought about them endlessly.
In her later years, Mona found her greatest joy doting over her grandson, Gabriel, who without a doubt will remember his “tata” most for how much she loved him. She recently welcomed a granddaughter, Sereena, who she was excited to spend time with and spoil as much as her grandson.
Through the challenges Mona faced in her life, and the good times she enjoyed with her family and friends, she will be remembered always for her strong faith in God. Knowing how strong Mona’s faith was, which she modelled for us every day, allows us to better accept our unexpected loss of this beautiful, much loved human being.
Mona leaves behind her husband of fourty-four years, Georges, her daughters, Angela and Julie, and her son Tony; and two grandchildren, Gabriel, and Sereena. She also leaves behind six sisters: Angele, Marie (Anis), Jamile (Habib), Georgette, Maha, and Joumana; and three brothers: Josef (Ghayle), Michel (Antoinette), and Jean (Rita). Mona is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the world.
Mona was predeceased by her parents, Saide, and Georges.
Funeral Mass for Mona will be celebrated at St. Cecilia Catholic Church (321 – 90 Avenue SE, Calgary) on Thursday July 7 at 11:00am with reception to follow in the church hall.
