It is with profound sadness that the family of Norma Jeanne Spackman (Shearer) announces her passing on March 7, 2017, at the age of 89 years. Norma was born in Arrowwood, Alberta, on October 31, 1927 (Halloween), the youngest of four children, to Katherine (Kitty) and James Russell Shearer. She grew up in Black Diamond, where her father was the Principal of the local High School and Magistrate. Norma went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta, where she met her future husband, Dr. Leo Spackman. Leo and Norma moved to Montreal where Leo undertook post-graduate studies in Urology at Montreal General Hospital, while Norma continued to pursue her nursing career. Norma and Leo settled in Calgary to raise their four children, Keith (Faye), Dale (Cathy), Doug (Heather) and Sylvia (Norm) Toy. Norma was a kind, generous and loving person of great faith who dedicated her life to caring for family and to extended family, friends and her church. She was passionate about her nursing career. Following in the footsteps of her mother, who was an accomplished piano player and music teacher, Norma loved to play her beloved organ. She was a skilled and accomplished seamstress and excelled at needlepoint, quilting, smocking and knitting and was a wonderful cook. Norma brought joy to all to whom she came in contact and especially loved to spend happy time with and care for her eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Norma was predeceased by husband, Leo, sisters, Isobel and Geraldine, and brother, Milton. Norma is also survived by her many loved nieces and nephews and their families. Forever will you be in our hearts. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the staff of Mackenzie East, Seton, for all of their care and support. A Funeral Service will be held for Norma at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – 24th Street Chapel (10923 – 24 Street SW, Calgary) on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association. Messages of condolence may be forwarded to the family at www.piersons.ca.
