Richard Farraway passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 95 years old.
Richard will be dearly missed by his four children, Jo-Ann Newall (John), Kris Farraway, David Farraway (Krista) and Sara-Lynn Farraway (Paul) ; Six grandchildren, Jason, Karly, Kyle, Stevie-Lynn, Zachary and Samuel; twelve great-grandchildren; his brother Tom Farraway (Mary); and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his wife Joan in 2021; daughter Nancy Huntley in 2017; and six siblings Irene, Mary, Elsie, Alice, Keith and Jean.
Richard was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. After grade 8, during World War II Richard left school to work and support his family. At age 19, he began serving his mission in Great Britain for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He returned to Canada and began working in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where tests indicated his education was beyond high school, in spite of his leaving school at a young age. In May of 1953, while stationed in Montreal, he met Joan Petrie and fell in love. After a brief courtship, they were married and began many adventures together. Richard’s time in the RCAF took the family to Germany, Vancouver, Ontario, Cold Lake, AB and finally to Calgary where the family settled in Sarcee Meadows for over 50 years. Richard spent 15 years with the Canada Post and in addition held positions on the Sarcee Meadows board of directors and the Credit union board. Richard loved a good game of cribbage, family picnics and watching his Hamilton Tiger Cats play. Richard will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a well-respected High Priest in his church. Richard was a kind and loving man and would go to any lengths for his family, he will be sorely missed.
A Funeral Service will be held for Richard at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – Heritage Chapel (935 Heritage Drive SW, Calgary) on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 am. It will be broadcast live at
