Stuart Neil Hawthorne was born Jan 03, 1989 to David Hawthorne and Ariel Racine in Edmonton, AB. He is survived by family members including his wife Thea, son Jack, older brother Adam (Amanda), nieces Bristol and Brooke, younger brother Steven, parents David and Ariel, and grandmother Donna. Stuart (Stu) was raised in Sherwood Park, AB where he made lifelong friendships and developed his hobbies. Growing up, Stu participated in sports and culture including Ukrainian dancing, football, and snowboarding and like many young men, he also spent significant time playing video games, board games, and getting into mischief with his close friends. Throughout his youth he was also exposed to hunting, both game birds and big game, and into his adult years Stu deeply enjoyed spending time hunting with family, friends, and solo with his chocolate lab Revy.
Stu met the love of his life, Thea, on a snowboarding trip in 2012. Thea and Stu were true partners in life and embarked on many adventures through the 11.5 years they were together. They dated for many years before purchasing their dream acreage east of Sherwood Park and setting down roots. In 2020 Stu proposed while out duck hunting, with a ring he designed from family heirloom jewelry; Thea, of course, said yes. In September 2021, they married in their backyard and just over a year later on January 5, 2023 they welcomed their beautiful baby boy, Jack, into their lives.
In the fall of 2022 Stuart was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, a typically easy-to-treat blood cancer. Unfortunately, just two weeks after the birth of Jack, it was found that the cancer progressed aggressively and Stu was admitted to the University of Alberta hospital for chemotherapy and preparation for a stem cell transplant, the only hope for a cure. Despite rare complications and steep odds Stu never lost his spark, his newborn son motivating him to stay positive and continue on strong as ever. During the difficult months in hospital Thea and Jack were cornerstones for Stuart, visiting daily and providing undying love and support. Stu was able to spend as much time as possible with Jack, hear his first laugh, witness his first time rolling over, first solid foods and even his first time experiencing grass.
On May 08, 2023 Stuart was transferred to the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic in Calgary, AB where he received his stem cell transplant from his older brother, Adam. After the transplant there was a glimmer of hope as his body seemed to be positively responding. Sadly, due to a weakened immune system from the transplant process, Stu developed a lung infection that did not respond to treatment. On the evening of June 29, 2023 during a tremendous lightning storm, surrounded by family and friends, Stuart passed away.
Stuart’s memory will live on in all of those there that day, and many others. Stu was a passionate, gentle, caring, loyal and strong man; he inspired those he met with his kindness, resilience, and unfaltering love for his family and friends. Stuart’s physical presence will be greatly missed and is irreplaceable but his memory will live on through Thea, Jack, and all those who knew him. It is with the knowledge that his spirit will live on eternally and be watching over all of us that provides comfort to those who have been blessed by the presence of such a great man, friend, son, brother, grandson, husband and father.
