Vernal Edward Bruce
November 8, 1941 — October 31, 2023
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Vernal Edward Bruce on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 81.
Vernal was born in Mandeville, Manchester, Jamaica. He was the ninth of ten children born to James H and Rose Augusta Bruce. At age 21, he immigrated into Eastern Canada and then moved to Calgary in the late 1970s.
Vernal had a wonderful laugh, loved a good joke and loved being a jokester. He enjoyed playing dominoes and cricket. He was exceptional at working with his hands and was a skilled carpenter, handyperson and baker. He was always available to help a friend or family member in need.
His wife Peggy; son Clayton Manhertz; son Howard (Mimi) Bruce; grandsons Caleb and Joshua; sisters Ice and Kathleen; a large church family as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and loved ones, survive him.
His parents; siblings, Herve, Gwendolyn, Delvin, Roselva, Robert, Claude and Gwendolyn (2); and his son Patrick, predeceased him.
A drop-in Public Visitation will be held at Pierson’s Funeral Service Ltd (4121 17 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm with a short prayer service at approximately 6:30pm.
A Funeral Service will be held at Bridgeland Seventh-day Adventist Church (48 12 St NE, Calgary, Alberta) on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at 11:00am with a viewing prior beginning at 10:00am.
