Walter Darryl Murdock

March 27, 1971 — November 17, 2023

On Friday, November 17th, 2023, peacefully with loved ones by his side Walter Darryl Murdock passed away at Rockyview General Hospital, at the age of 52 years.

Walter was born and raised in Winnipeg. He left Winnipeg at the age of 17 and moved to Toronto. Walter had also lived in Timmins and Ottawa before settling in Calgary, Alberta. He was a friendly, funny, and fearless person.

Walter was a crafter, he loved to make Indigenous crafts such as dreamcatchers, breast plates, turtle rattles, headdresses etc. In the last two years he taught his sons, Tytus and Elijah his arts and crafts spending quality time together. He loved to collect electric guitars, music CDs & movies. He liked to be outdoors and have picnics in the park, listening to his favorite music with his partner, Kathleen, his sons and his pet turtle, Island. He liked to record spontaneous videos with his smartphone. Family was important to him, he kept them in his heart and would share their pictures on his social media. Walter adored his grandchildren, Penny Rivera Perez of Winnipeg and Kenai Lazarus of North Bay who he wished to be closer to. He spoke about climate change and was passionate about it.

Walter is predeceased by his mother, Doreen McKay; sons, Sheldon Gunner and Killian Gunner; cousin, Marcel Murdock; uncles, Ted Murdock, Marvin McKay and Ernest McKay; auntie, Shirley Pangman; and his grandparents, Walter and Violet Murdock, and Rene and Vitaline McKay.

Walter will be lovingly remembered by his partner and best friend Kathleen Dennis of Calgary; sons, Tytus and Elijah Gunner both of Calgary; mother of his children, Shirley Gunner of Ottawa; father, Kenneth Murdock; sister, Shelley (Daryll) Sumner of Winnipeg; and his numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his pet turtle, Island.

The family would like to thank Murray’s House staff for their support to Walter and also the Rockyview General Hospital’s ICU Unit and Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and care they provided for Walter while in their care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to any charity fighting climate change.
