Willem Mellies passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at the age of 86 years.
Willem was born in the Netherlands on September 7, 1937. At age 21 he immigrated into Canada. Years later, in 1967, he returned to Holland and married Frouwiena “Winnie” Mellies. Shortly after the marriage, they moved as a family to Calgary. In 1968 Willem officially became a Canadian citizen.
His love for art led him into a career where he worked as a Commercial Artist for Stampede Display, Western Display and Panex Display. He enjoyed music, movies, gardening, taking nature walks, artwork, and reading. He was also a proud a member of the Dutch Canadian Choir for four years.
Willem is survived by his wife, of 54 years, Frouwiena “Winnie” Mellies; his children, Jasper Mellies and his wife Cindy Braden, John Mellies and his wife Laurie Mellies, Deanna Daniels and her husband John Daniels; four grandchildren, Michael Mellies, Matthew Mellies, Jenessa Daniels, and Jevan Daniels; four great-grandchildren Tabitha Mellies, Dominic Mellies, Avaleigh Mellies, Addison Mellies; siblings, Benjamin Mellies from Germany, and Gerrit-Dina Voerman of the Netherlands. He was predeceased by his mother, Johanna Gerrit-Dina Wolfs; father and stepmother, Willem Mellies and Hendrikje de Waght; brothers, Piet Mellies and Johannes Mellies.
