Our Story: A Family Business

Chesley N. Pierson 1928-2021

Joan Rose Pierson 1932-2019

In 1983, Chesley and Joan Pierson and their family fulfilled a dream of opening their own funeral business. They began by leasing a modest commercial space in the Forest Lawn area of Calgary. The family philosophy of meeting every family’s needs in a caring a compassionate manner continues today.

During the first few years of business, the Pierson’s were fortunate to be able to purchase the building they were leasing. They were also given an opportunity to purchase the “Art Bealing Flower Gallery”, a florist they shared the building with. Art Bealing began his flower shop in 1957 and built a solid business with a reputation of beautiful flower arrangements and top quality flowers, a tradition that also continues today.

With many families calling on the Pierson family in their time of need, it was clear that the Pierson’s had solidly established themselves in East Calgary.

As Calgary continued to grow, it was clear that the business also needed to adapt and grow. In 1994, the Pierson Family completed extensive renovations to their 17 Avenue SE location. The chapel was enlarged, a kitchen was added for reception purposes, a garage was added and the office and meeting areas were also expanded. Additional changes were also made to accommodate the variety of cultures that need our services. Pierson’s Funeral Service serves new Canadians from around the globe. They serve every Christian religion as well as Buddhist, Sikh, Muslim and Hindus. The Pierson Family has a reputation of being accommodating and flexible and being especially sensitive to the specific needs of each religion and ethnic community.

As people from across Canada and around the world have moved to Calgary, it has become necessary to return many of them to their homes after they have passed away, which is referred to as “repatriation”. Funeral Homes across Canada and around the world trust Pierson’s Funeral Service to look after clients who pass away in the Calgary area. Pierson’s Funeral Service has become specialist in returning loved ones to their homes, whether it is New Brunswick, El Salvador, Africa, the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam or back home to Saskatchewan. Many families in Calgary can testify to the prompt professionalism and care taken to find solutions for their family funerals.

With the growth in business, the Pierson Family has added important key staff to their core working group. Each is dedicated to their duties and brings a wealth of knowledge, professionalism, compassion and commitment. These individuals are more than just great Funeral Directors, they are valuable members of the community and part of our business family. They attend church regularly, serve in leadership roles, volunteer in community organizations, play on sports teams and contribute to the strong fabric of our city. More than ever, Pierson’s Funeral service is able to provide personal attention that families deserve with quality services and affordable prices.

Recently Pierson’s has expanded their reach and grown their business operations by purchasing Cochrane Country Funeral Home, Pet Heaven Crematorium and building the Foothills Crematorium and Care Centre. In 2016 we opened up the Country Hills Crematorium in partnership with members from the South Asian Community to offer Calgary’s most modern and unique funeral home only a short distance from the Airport. Each of these projects fulfill the Pierson mission: “To deliver, with pride, exceptional funeral and related services to Calgary and area communities, exercising honesty, integrity and compassion in all aspects of our business.”

Today Michael Pierson is the President of Pierson’s Funeral Service. Rose Lynn Root, the eldest daughter in the Pierson family is the Secretary Treasurer of the business and operates the Flower Shop. There are currently other members of the 3rd and 4th generation employed in the business including David Root who is the Funeral Home’s general manager and Rebecca Walker who assists in the Flower Shop.

Michael Pierson is dedicated to carrying on the family tradition of quality, professional service and inexpensive pricing. More importantly, he understands the needs of the families they serve and has an organization that works to anticipate all your needs and works to look after each request, no matter how small. It is an honour and privilege to serve families when they call in their time of grief. A great deal of trust is placed in our hands and our goal is to work to meet every expectation, and then exceed them.

One of our strengths as a family business has been the support of other like-minded family businesses. We are proud to be members of Selected Independent Funeral Homes, https://www.selectedfuneralhomes.org/
